I ran into a friend of mine - he wanted to give me a little time
Release the demons he had kept in his mind
and be the sole sole reason for the change in my life

And I said, "Who are you kidding, man, I'm doing just fine
And if I do say so even a little bit high. You think you can change me
based on you -- you got a lot to learn about me regarding you."

He said, "Wake up friend, you've been driving blind.
What you think of yourself is just a little contrived.
Now I've seen more than you ever will; and
I'll make you so aware of it, your mind will feel ill."

It's not a real good feeling when you're finding out
that you've become the very person you had
warned yourself about.

And he said, "Let me start from one sub A,
I've known you long enough to say that
the people who you love become your enemies
The ones you've come to know will make you feel free.

But keep your head man, your friends are your friends
and like a Hallmark card says they'll stay till the end.
They'll tell it like it is and say when you've gone bad
And they'll be the only ones who could be truly glad

When you stand on the stage
And you give 'em a wink
Because they know where you've been
And they still buy you a drink
and you don't have to hand out a thing for free
Just do what comes next, dear, and you'll soon see..."

He said, "Go to all the free shows,
Show the folks you'll make the time.
Just the way that they would and
you can cancel all your bad times."

He said, "I hope this helps
and gives you a point of view.
And I hope you hear the words that I've said
and the things that come around you reside in your head
That way if you succeed or fail,
at least you know it was all for real."

And I said, "I take it from a man who knows.
If you keep your heart light, your mind will grow.
If what you're looking for is a guarantee,
then how could I not when your words came from me?"
