Kevin Mileski: Listen/Look

As Luck Would Have It

(Kevin Mileski)
2003

Carey works real hard
He sees the names and faces of all the people who pass by
Courage and sanity, the two blind cases
and the reason for the marriage of the earth and sky

Got a call from him just last week
he talked of pain in relocation and a car that would not run
he said two men were standing on the train behind him
Talked of stocks and how everything had just begun.

Where'd I park my car?
I know I left it here last night.
They said it was a real nice town.
But all I see is this broken glass on the ground
I get that feeling -
Oh Lord, I can't believe what I've seen.
Somebody told me once before, when I slam that open door
someone would open it for me.

He's teaching English at a high school out in Boston
Tells the kids he's special, that he constantly refrains from
yelling out profanities and cursing all the teachers
The system treats him well, he says, but causes him some pain.

He carries luggage all around the airport concourse
Tells his friends just where he's been a long long time.
I lost my guitar long before he even landed
Luck just seems to follow him and does so to spite mine.

Where'd I park my car?
I know I left it here last night.
They said it was a real nice town.
But all I see is this broken glass on the ground
I get that feeling -
Oh Lord, I can't believe what I've seen.
Somebody told me once before, when I slam that open door
someone would open it for me.

He was an activist of very mild proportions.
Talked to most everyone and never did complain
I'd ask him questions that I knew he couldn't answer
Just as luck would have it, his refrain was still the same.

He'd ask me questions he knew I couldn't handle
so I'd answer back with what intelligence might say.
He was the teacher then and I was still the student.
My mind just kept on wondering how he'd ever stay the same.

Where'd I park my car?
I know I left it here last night.
They said it was a real nice town.
But all I see is this broken glass on the ground
I get that feeling -
Oh Lord, I can't believe what I've seen.
Somebody told me once before, when I slam that open door
someone would open it for me.
